General Information

The 1st September 2011 was a significant and historic day when the Irish Medium Unit opened for the first time in St. Malachy’s High School. Pupils came to us from Bunscoil Bheanna Boirche Castlewellan, and St. Mary’s and Patrick’s P.S. in Downpatrick. We were very lucky this year when a pupil from the Bunscoil in Newry joined us.

Our main aims are:

  • Continue the development of thinking and communication skills
  • Strengthen and improve language skills
  • Promote a caring and supportive child centred environment
  • Provide a broad, balanced and relevant curriculum designed to equip students for the challenges of life

There are five teachers currently providing a range of subjects through the medium of Irish. Here are the subjects we provide, the teachers responsible for that subject and the number of periods the pupils receive in that subject each week.

The Irish Medium Stream is a vital element to our school community and the Irish Medium pupils take part in every aspect of school life. We have pupils on the football, hurling, soccer, netball and camogie teams. Other pupils are in the choir and some are members of the drama club as well.
