General aims

The ethos of the PE Department is very much about active learning and enjoyment. Lessons are designed to encourage a maximum uptake in participation with a focus on achievement for all. Whilst we actively support competition and excellence, we also recognise that for many, sport is about the taking part. Whatever the student's desire for sport, we aim to deliver a curriculum that will encourage an active lifestyle and participation in sport and exercise long after they leave school. Pupils are given opportunities to participate in a wide variety of activities in curriculum time and are actively encouraged to engage with the extensive and successful extra curricular programme.

Key Stage 3

Pupils will experience a selection of the following activities: Gaelic football, hurling, Soccer, netball, Badminton, table-tennis, basketball, Indoor hockey, athletics, dance, gymnastics, softball, orienteering and health and fitness

Key Stage 4

Programmes of study to include details of external examinations, modules, practical’s etc.


Pupils will take part in a selection of the following activities: Gaelic football, hurling, Soccer, netball, Badminton, table-tennis, basketball, athletics, dance, gymnastics, softball, orienteering and health and fitness.

Theory / Exam

GCSE Physical Education (Edexcel) – Written Paper – 40%

Practical Activities – 60% (Performance 48% - Analysis of performance 12%)

Post 16
St Malachy’s High school Castlewellan are offering local students and players a unique opportunity to apply for a nationally recognised sports qualification equivalent to 1 A-Level grade while at the same time developing their coaching and playing skills within the GAA and other sports.BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma In Sport


POST 16 Examinations


BTEC Sport advanced subsidiary diploma


This course is equivalent to one A-level and consists of 7 units over the course of 2 years.


BTEC Sport Diploma


This Course is equivalent to two A-Levels and consists of 14 units over the course of 2 years.

Awarding Body

Entry Requirements Applicants should have at least 5 GCSEs at grade C or above.

 A grade C or above in PE is deemed desirable but not essential.
