IME in St. Malachy’s High School – Ardscoil Naomh Maolmhaodhóg

The Irish medium stream in St Malachy’s High School, Castlewellan is well established and has been operational for 5 years now. In this exciting technological age, we offer innovative teaching and learning through the medium of Irish, developing our students thinking skills and personal capabilities whilst building upon their Irish experience at primary school, creating students that are accomplished, fluent speakers of Irish.

Within the stream, students have the opportunity to study up to 50% of their curriculum through the medium of Irish whilst integrating with other students in the year group for practical subjects.

The IME vision for education in St. Malachy’s High School is one where students receive a well-rounded, high-quality education in a bilingual setting where their learning needs are supported and challenged so that they can reach their full potential. Our students are given the educational opportunity to become skilful individuals making a positive and effective contribution to the local and wider community.

We actively enter a range of competitions from Feis to trath na gceist with great success. Indeed, the school has just been awarded the Athar Uí Mhuirí Shield from Conradh na Gaeilge.  We welcome a range of visitors, from Irish language authors to journalists and other media personalities adding to our students’ holistic Irish language experience.  IME students are also given the opportunity to socialise again through the medium of Irish at our weekly ‘Cumann na Craice’ and the after school ‘Cumann Gaelach’.
